How things get chosen
Most lists like this are advertising wearing a recommendation’s clothes. I am trying to do something else.
Everything here needs a real reason to be — what it offers, who it suits, and equally who it does not suit. Where there is something worth knowing beforehand, it gets written down, including when that is inconvenient.
Some of these I have taken myself. Others I have read closely enough to say something useful, and I say plainly which is which.
